What the numbers mean
Under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5-24.9 healthy, 25-29.9 overweight and 30+ obese. These WHO cut-offs are a general screening tool for adults.
When BMI misleads
BMI divides weight by height squared, so it can't tell muscle from fat. A lifter can read 'overweight' at 10% body fat, while a sedentary person can read 'normal' with high fat. Pair it with body fat percentage and waist measurement.
